How To Install and Configure RIS Server
7.1. RIS
SERVER
Remote
Installation Services (RIS) supports remote installations of Windows
Server 2003 operating systems. This means that you can initiate RIS-based
installations remotely on a computer without being physically present at the
computer.
Use
Remote Installation Services (RIS) to simplify the installation of operating
systems on client computers in your organization by performing remote image-
and CD-based installations on client computers with no operating system or on
failed computers that need restoration of the operating system. RIS enables you
to create, maintain, and quickly install identical operating system and
software configurations on multiple remote client computers with a predefined
level of end-user interaction.
RIS
uses Pre-boot execution Environment (PXE) technology to enable client computers
without an operating system to boot remotely to a RIS server that performs
installation of a supported operating system over a TCP/IP network connection.
You can deploy one or more RIS servers to accommodate your client operating
system needs, but each client must have compatible hardware, which includes a
BIOS and network adapter that support the remote-boot process. You can create
different sets of RIS images to accommodate various configurations of different
groups of client computers. You can also use Group Policy settings to limit the
installation options that RIS presents to clients. You can use RIS to provide
interactive operating system installations that require user input, or
fully-automated installations that require no user input other than logon
credentials. The process steps described in this chapter can help IT
professionals in medium and large organizations successfully plan, design, and
execute a RIS-based operating system deployment. It is recommended that you use
RIS when you have a large number of clients that need clean installations of an
operating system and when you have an idea of the software configurations you
want to deploy in your organization. To deploy RIS, your network infrastructure
must be able to support RIS-based installations. Also, DNS and Dynamic Host
Configuration Protocol (DHCP) servers must be running on the network and you
must have the Active Directory® directory service installed. In
addition, you must be familiar with the Windows XP Professional and
Windows Server 2003 setup process.
7.2. Let’s We Make a RIS SERVER
step 1.
Click on "add or remove programs" in control panel
Chose "add/remove windows components"
scroll down to
‘Remote Installation Services’ place a check mark in the empty box and click
next to continue. (Windows will prompt for the Server CD so make sure it’s in
the drive).
once done, click finish
and reboot the
computer when prompted to do so by clicking on
step 2. Starting
the RIS server process.
Click
on the start menu and ‘run’, type rissetup and click ok
point the RIS
installation folder to a separate partition from the OS
insert the Windows XP SP2 cd, and tell windows where the XP cd is going to be (in this case drive F:)
Reboot
the Computer
At
this point the server should now be ready to use a RIS server.
Enabling DHCP Options 66 and
67
To configure option
66 and 67, load the DHCP console and select your scope.
Select scope option
and add the following:
66
192.168.0.1(add ip of pc or domain name of pc)
67
OSChooser\i386\startrom.com(it’s RIS boot file name)
Your RIS server is
ready to use go to LAN PC start pc and press F12 to boot LAN Card and
start installing process step to step.
Troubleshooting RIS Installations
If the above error message appears during the Client
Installation Wizard, complete the following steps:
Putting
a driver into text mode RIS setup
If
the driver is in a ZIP file or a Self-extracting archive you’ll have to unpack
it. Some driver packages contain drivers in various languages and for various platforms, i.e. XP, Win2000, NT and
so on. Pick the right architecture for your RIS image.
After
extract image Create a folder called $oem$ and
create subfolder one by one whose show below line E:\RemoteInstall\Setup\English\Images\XP_SP3\$OEM$\$1\Drivers\LAN
Put driver as show below fig.
